Auburn, NY votes to ban acceptance of gas drilling wastewater at its treatment plant

Greetings,

I am thrilled to let you know that citizen activists and elected officials today won a critical anti-fracking victory in Auburn, NY. The City Council voted 3-1 to ban acceptance of natural gas drilling wastewater at their local municipal wastewater treatment plant. Wahoo. Way to go.

I believe this is the first vote of its kind in the nation and sets a precedent that could be replicated in other communities, notably Sherburne, NY, the location of the last municipal facility accepting contaminated gas drilling wastewater in New York State.

We are underway/Martens News Conference at 11 AM in Albany/GET THERE

Greetings,

I am giving you all a heads up that DEC Commissioner Martens will hold a press conference about the draft SGEIS at 11 a.m. at the New York Network Studio in Albany's Empire State Plaza.

When I and other activists met with him on 3/23/11, he said he wanted to provide equal protection for all New Yorkers, not just New York City's watershed. That policy obviously didn't make it into the final draft SGEIS.

Three months to thwart Governor Cuomo's fundamentally unfair Marcellus Shale proposal

Greetings,

It was revealed today that Governor Cuomo proposes to allow Marcellus Shale horizontal hydrofracturing to proceed in New York with the exception of the New York City and Syracuse watersheds, State lands and primary aquifers. See: http://www.dec.ny.gov/press/75403.html

His proposal is clearly an admission that Marcellus Shale horizontal hydrofracturing is inherently unsafe no matter what safeguards DEC might adopt in its revised draft SGEIS. Otherwise, the Governor would not propose to ban the practice in selected areas.

Major Alert: Natural Gas Leasing Impacts on Mortgage Lending

Greetings,

I am pleased to alert you to a letter that I wrote to Governor Cuomo yesterday. As you will see, I provided him with two key documents that reveal New York bankers are highly concerned about natural gas leasing impacts on mortgage lending.

Due to current lending policies and practices, properties with gas leases might not quality for mortgage loans. Properties might not quality for mortgage loans even if properties with gas leases are located within 200 feet.

The NYT Marcellus Shale Series

It is hard for me to believe that Ian Urbina's epic Marcellus Shale series ran in The New York Times only slightly more than two months ago. It seems like an eternity has passed since then.

From my biased perspective, it has been another excellent week in our Marcellus Shale fight. And it is only Wednesday.
