Area residents fight fracking bills

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Multiple Broome County municipalities are calling for impact assessments before fracking hits their communities.

Wednesday, Binghamton Mayor Matt Ryan and residents came together to address what they call questionable and possibly dangerous methods used during the fracking process.

Anti-drilling protest




UNION, N.Y. -- A group of Southern Tier residents made quite a stir Wednesday morning in the Town of Union. Members of various anti-drilling groups came together when they learned DEC Commissioner Joseph Martens was being interviewed at a local media outlet.

The group held up the signs as the commissioner exited the facility.
We spoke with one person who got a chance to talk to the commissioner and members of his team. She says she was pleased they let her speak her mind.

Residents protest Auburn treating gas drilling wastewater




Cayuga County residents rally to stop what they think is a controversial practice by the City of Auburn. Right now, the city accepts and treats wastewater from gas drilling operations, the treated water is then released into the Owasco River. As our Katie Gibas reports, protestors say they're concerned about what effects the byproduct will have on their watersheds.

Rally to expand hydrofracking impact study




As people on both sides of the hydrofracking debate wait for the state's environmental impact statement, one group is calling on the governor to expand the scope of the study. And Thursday, they rallied at the Capitol to share their concerns. Our Erin Connolly has more.

Cornell carcass digester spills wastewater into city waters

ITHACA, N.Y. -- An equipment malfunction at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine causes thousands of gallons of animal carcass wastewater to be dumped into Ithaca's Wastewater Treatment Facility and storm drains that run into Fall Creek and Beebe Lake.

A statement by Kyu-Jung Whang, Cornell University's vice president for facility services, described the spill that happened late Friday night.

Natural gas lease offer voted down by Broome County Legislature

Broome County won't be leasing its lands for natural gas drilling anytime soon. The county Legislature shot down a second offer from Inflection Energy. Our Rob Wu explains why most legislators were not in favor, and what this result may mean for the people of the county moving forward.
