Dear Commissioner Martens and Revision Team members:
I hope the DEC will fully address the many concerns when revising the Environmental Impact statement with regard to the proposed Marcellus horizontal shale drilling activity. The concerns are many and include:
~ water contamination due to many toxic liquids being forcefully injected deep into the rocks and seeping into surrounding ground water, aquifers, and subsequently streams and rivers.
~ major methane releases as a result of tapping into the gas (the figures on this issue makes cow methane concerns look trivial).
~ significant radiation leakage, well above normal limits, from tapping into the bedrock.
~ plummeting housing values in surrounding areas and all banks unwilling to provide mortgages for them and hence loss of tax revenue as a result of this circumstance.
~ complete loss of tourism, and revenue, in affected areas which cannot be reclaimed.
~ local road, sewer and other infrastructures damaged as a result of constant heavy machinery traffic, with the cost being solely born by localities.
~ environmental erosion from land clearing, road creation, holding pond spillovers etc.
~ fires and collateral damage from well head explosions
~ increased Federal, State and local dollars required to address multiple, perhaps long-term medical issues surrounding the entire proposed endeavor.
There are probably more issues that I cannot recall. The bottom line is that I hope you will take these concerns into account. Undoubtedly each of the above items will be addressed more substantially by professionals in those respective fields.
Sincerely,
Ilse F
