Crestwood salt cavern leakage concerns

06/01/18

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - The attempt to store propane gas in salt caverns along Seneca Lake, already fiercely opposed by many locals, has encountered another setback.

Walter Hang, is president of Toxics Targeting, a company that compiles known information on toxic sites, and then sells that information to the public.

Today, he released documents he says prove the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) knew of, and failed to disclose leakage concerns.

Those concerns were documented in Crestwood's storage application in 2011, in which the applicant said, "it is assumed that the cavern does leak…."

Hang says the state required Crestwood to come up with a plan to investigate the concern, but never required the investigation to be carried out.

The DEC issued a statement:

"The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has not made any final determination on Finger Lakes LPG Storage, LLC’s permit application for a proposed underground liquefied petroleum gas storage project. The decision will be based on a comprehensive review to determine if the application meets New York’s strict environmental standards designed to protect public health and the environment. "

We will keep you posted on any new developments.
