Greetings,

I write to share stunning information that could decide the fate of the massive Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) storage facility proposed for abandoned salt mine caverns on the west shore of historic Seneca Lake in Reading, NY.

For many years, the public was repeatedly assured that this hugely controversial gas storage project "will be safe to operate LPG injections and withdrawals under constant hydraulic pressures."

Toxics Targeting just posted for public review extensive information which reveals that the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) was informed in 2011 about documented LPG salt cavern storage leakage concerns.

Yet DEC failed to require the permit applicant to conduct an immediate study of the salt cavern leakage concerns as a precondition for deciding the permit application.

Instead, DEC inexplicably decided that the investigation "could be performed after permit issuance (if and when issued)."

Can you believe that? This makes no sense.

Seven years later, this critically important study still has not been completed due to a huge groundswell of public opposition which prevented DEC from granting the gas storage permit for the proposed project.

5/17/18 Law Firm Letter Regarding Pressure Testing

I recently alerted you to a letter from the law firm for the LPG storage permit applicant which announced that pressure testing would be undertaken based on "recent information."

The letter also requested that DEC "hold in abeyance any Decision on the appeals that are pending until the outcome of this pressure test has been reported to the Department and those involved with this proceeding have had a change to comment."

Scope of Salt Cavern Leakage Concerns Has Expanded

Salt cavern leakage concerns were originally associated with Gallery 1 and nearby Gallery 10 (wells 18, 52 and 57). Additional leakage concerns have since been confirmed. As a result, the proposed pressure testing will include other wells distributed over a large area of the Crestwood facility.

Take Urgent Action Today

Due to the total lack of candor and transparency, the public can have no confidence in DEC's LPG storage permit review proceeding.

I implore each and every activist who opposes LPG storage in Reading, NY to take immediate action to safeguard Seneca Lake from further toxic pollution harm.

Deluge Governor Cuomo with phone calls and keep phone banking him at 518 474 8390 to request that he DENY the gas storage permit for the proposed LPG storage facility in Reading, NY.

Request that the Governor adopt a moratorium on all regulatory approvals for fracked gas transmission pipelines, compressor stations, power plants, gas storage facilities and other infrastructure projects that would perpetuate New York's addiction to polluting fossil fuels which contribute to global climate change.

Become a signatory to our respectful: Coalition Letter Which Requests That Governor Cuomo Adopt a Statewide Moratorium on Fossil Fuel Project Approvals

The Governor's unwillingness to adopt a fossil fuel infrastructure approval moratorium must dog him in the months to come. Pour it on. Crank up the heat. Do not stop until you drop.

Promise to remember in November.

Thanks so much. Go, Go, Go!!!

Onward and upward,

Walter
