Greetings,
I am thrilled to report that we have successfully launched an unprecedented campaign to protect Cayuga Lake from potentially catastrophic Cargill salt mining threats. In the days ahead, our efforts will also address water quality impairments associated with toxic chemicals, suspended solids and excessive phosphorus loading which each summer causes vast algal blooms and massive aquatic weed infestations.
Cayuga Lake Needs Our Help
Our work is cut out for us. This campaign is the latest chapter in a grueling 19-year battle to end pollution hazards which resulted in Cayuga Lake's inclusion in the National 303(d) Registry of Impaired Waterbodies. Problems that were originally limited to the southern 5,000 acres of Cayuga Lake have now spread throughout the entire lake.
Our goal is to hold Governor Cuomo accountable for preventing disastrous salt mining problems while remediating existing pollution hazards through a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) comprehensive watershed plan that is being developed.
If we succeed, our model of effective action could be replicated in a staggering number of communities that struggle with long-standing extraction mining ills and water quality impairments.
Help Organize Cayuga Lake Residents as Well as Everyone Concerned About Water Pollution and Extraction Mining Hazards
In only a couple of days, our new coalition letter has a total of 234 signatories, including many citizens who live on Cayuga Lake as well as physicians, academics, teachers, business owners, religious leaders, artists, farmers, elected officials and serious heavy hitters whose names ring big alarm bells on the Second Floor.
Equally importantly, we gained the support of citizens from all over New York State and from coast-to-coast. Thank you one and all. See below many impressive groups and institutions referenced by signatories.
Start Knocking on Doors
I implore Cayuga Lake residents to knock on doors and talk to their neighbors in order to find hundreds of additional signatories. It will not be easy to stop the biggest private corporation in the nation from continuing to mine salt under Cayuga Lake. We are in for a brutally hard fight.
Go, Go, Go. Every signatory counts: Coalition Letter Which Requests That Governor Cuomo Prohibit Issuance of State Permits/Authorizations for Salt Mining Under Cayuga Lake and Require a Transition to Salt Mining Only Under Dry Land
PHONEBANK Governor Cuomo at 518 474 8390. Demand that he PROHIBIT ALL PERMITS that would directly or indirectly allow salt mining UNDER Cayuga Lake.
Call for adoption of a comprehensive Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) pollution clean up plan for Cayuga Lake. The Governor will be shocked when you make that request.
