Letter from green groups to Gov. Cuomo: Stand firm and follow the scientific imperative to maintain New York's moratorium on fracking

Dear Governor Cuomo, (cc Shah, Martens)

We, the undersigned environmental organizations and public advocates, urge you to stand firm in maintaining New York State’s de facto moratorium on high-volume hydraulic fracturing (‘fracking’). We greatly appreciate that you have been resolute in insisting that science dictates any decisions regarding fracking, and we have faith you will continue to do so.

Chesapeake New York gas lease deal expected next week

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Chesapeake Energy Corp will finalize an agreement next week to drop about 12,000 acres of land leased for energy drilling in New York state, as a moratorium on fracking continues into its sixth year.

Reuters reported last month that Chesapeake decided to walk away from about 100 leases in Broome and Tioga Counties in the south of the state, ending a two-year legal battle with landowners who wanted to cancel expired leases or renegotiate for better terms.

Cuomo: No decision yet on hydrofracking

ALBANY — Gov. Andrew Cuomo debated the pros and cons of hydraulic fracturing Monday, but he said the state has yet to reach a conclusion on the controversial drilling practice—which has been on hold for nearly five years.
