How to Use the Toxic Site Map

Toxics Targeting helps you locate more than 270,000 known and potential toxic hazards in New York State. Type an address or community name in the search box and click. All three map windows instantly center on that location. See any reported toxic sites? Click on any map symbol to center the map again. Use the navigational tools in any window to zoom in/out, pan, rotate. Compare locations using Google, Bird's Eye View and Street View. Click the Map Legend or scroll down for more information.

Map Legend:

MTBE Spill: Leaking tanks or spills that reportedly involve MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), a toxic gasoline additive that can pollute groundwater, drinking water and indoor air. Identified sites reportedly do not meet clean up standards. Sample profile. Hazardous Waste/Store/Disposal Site: a permitted facility involved with treatment, storage or disposal of hazardous waste. Sample profile.
Tank Failure: a reported structural breach involving a petroleum or chemical storage tank, such as a crack or a hole, typically caused by corrosion. Identified sites reportedly do not meet clean up standards. Sample profile. US National Priority Superfund Site: a site known to pose environmental or health hazards that are being investigated or cleaned up under the Federal Superfund program.
Tank Test Failure: a petroleum or chemical storage tank that reportedly failed a tank tightness test. This typically means that the tank has a crack or a hole, but no release might have occurred if the test was performed improperly. Identified sites reportedly do not meet clean up standards. NYS Superfund Site: a site that can pose environmental or public health hazards listed in the State Superfund program. Sample profile.
Spill > 25 gal/lbs: a reported release involving at least 25 gallons or pounds of product. Identified sites reportedly do not meet clean up standards. Sample profile. US Superfund/CERCLIS Site: a site that can pose environmental or public health hazards requiring investigation or clean up and is listed in the Federal Superfund program. Note: some of these sites are designated "No further remedial action planned." Those sites are often eligible for other clean up funding programs.
Gasoline Spill: a reported release of gasoline. Identified sites reportedly do not meet clean up standards. Sample profile. Brownfield Site: abandoned, idled or under-used industrial and commercial property where expansion or redevelopment may be hindered by environmental contamination.
Spill: an uncontrolled release of petroleum or other hazardous substances reported to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Identified sites reportedly do not meet clean up standards. Hazardous Substance Study: a study of sites contaminated with hazardous substances that can pose environmental or public health threats. These sites originally were not eligible for state clean up funding programs. Sample profile.
Solid Waste: active and inactive landfills, incinerators, transfer stations or other solid waste management facilities. Hazardous Waste Generator: a facility that generates hazardous waste or reports hazardous waste information to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation or the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.
NYS Superfund Qualifying Site: a site investigated for possible listing in the State Superfund. Chemical Bulk Storage: a facility storing hazardous substances listed in 6 NYCRR Part 597 in aboveground tanks with capacities of 185 gallons or more and/or underground tanks of any size. Updated versions of this database have been publicly withheld since 2002 due to Homeland Security concerns.
Major Oil Storage Facility: a facility with more than 400,000 gallons of petroleum storage capacity. Sample profile. Petroleum Bulk Storage: a site reported to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation with more than 1,100 gallons of petroleum storage capacity.
Hazardous Waste Corrective Action: a hazardous waste facility involving regulatory corrective action activity reported by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. "E" Sites: parcels assigned a special environmental ("E") designation under the CEQR process. E designation requires specific protocols to be followed prior to redevelopment. Sample profile.
Toxic Release Inventory Site: a facility reported by the U. S. Toxic Release Inventory System. These sites typically release acutely toxic chemicals. Historic Utility Site: a selected historic utility facility identified in New York City.
Legal Civil/Administrative Docket: Environmental enforcement or cost recovery legal actions by the U. S. Justice Department on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency. Hazardous Waste Violation: a regulatory compliance violation reported by NYS or the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Air Discharge Facility: a facility granted an air discharge permit. Permit Compliance System: a selected facility granted a National or State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (S/NPDES) wastewater permit.
