Emergency Ithaca Asbestos Action Alert: Call Mayor Myrick TODAY to require all Asbestos-Containing Materials to be removed from the former Tompkins County Public Library before the structure is permitted to be demolished

Call Ithaca Mayor Myrick TODAY at 607-274-6501 to Demand That he Require All Asbestos-Containing Materials to be Removed From the former Tompkins County Public Library Before the Abandoned Structure is Permitted to be Demolished

The abandoned Tompkins County Public Library could be demolished any day even though it is extensively contaminated with Asbestos-Containing Materials.

Asbestos is a human cancer-causing agent. Exposure to this toxic mineral can cause mesothelioma, an almost invariably fatal form of cancer, lung cancer, and asbestosis, a debilitating lung ailment. There is no known safe level of exposure to asbestos.

The Asbestos-Containing Materials were originally going to be removed from the interior of the library before the building was demolished. That plan changed when the City of Ithaca condemned the building. This allows the building to be demolished without removing the asbestos.

Demolishing the building without removing the Asbestos-Containing Materials would almost certainly release asbestos into the residential neighborhood around the library site. Thousands of people live in this area or walk through it every day.
