I implore you to become a signatory to our extraordinarily important: Coalition Letter Which Requests That Governor Cuomo Prohibit Issuance of State Permits/Authorizations for Salt Mining Under Cayuga Lake and Require a Transition to Salt Mining Only Under Dry Land
It is imperative that we gain more than 1,000 signatories. Go hog wild. Knock on doors. Forward this alert to everyone you know. Safeguarding Cayuga Lake from pollution harm would set a critical precedent for cleaning up other impaired waterbodies in the Finger Lakes and across New York. All for one, one for all.
See below terrific media coverage from yesterday. Thank you Assembly Representatives Barbara Lifton and Steve Englebright.
Greetings:
Please TAKE URGENT ACTION TODAY!!! to make sure that Governor Cuomo DOES NOT REAUTHORIZE A CRITICAL MINING PERMIT that would allow Cargill Corporation to continue to mine salt directly under Cayuga Lake for potentially decades to come.
Cargill's mining permit expires TODAY, 11/1/17!!!
It is imperative that salt mining under Cayuga Lake be phased out as soon as possible. This is the only way to safeguard this incomparable waterbody 100% from a potential catastrophic salt mine collapse similar to the infamous Retsof mine disaster on March 12, 1994.
That salt mine catastrophe drained local water wells dry, polluted a pristine groundwater aquifer, reduced property values and caused a 900-foot-wide sinkhole. A similar mine failure under Cayuga Lake would cause irreparable harm.
Beat the bushes for more signatories to our important: Coalition Letter Which Requests That Governor Cuomo Prohibit Issuance of State Permits/Authorizations for Salt Mining Under Cayuga Lake and Require a Transition to Salt Mining Only Under Dry Land
Tie the Governor's switchboard into the Gordian Knot by calling 518 474 8390. Keep calling in the days to come. Do not stop until you drop.
Tell Governor Cuomo not to reauthorize Cargill's mining permit.
Demand that Governor Cuomo require Cargill to phase out its salt mining activities under Cayuga Lake with minimum delay and transition to mining salt under dry land surrounding Cayuga Lake.
