Still No Final SGEIS Findings Statement Issued as Legislative Session Drags On and Many Deals Are Being Struck

Thanks so much to everyone who has generously supported Toxics Targeting's unique research, advocacy and organizing campaign to keep shale fracking out of New York: http://toxicstargeting.com/MarcellusShale/donate

Greetings,

Another week has come and gone since I last wrote you. The Cuomo administration still has not issued a Findings Statement to conclude the SGEIS proceeding. As a result, no final decision has been made to impose the statewide shale fracking prohibition promised by the Governor more than six months ago.

The New York legislature remains in session even though a "big ugly" framework agreement was announced on Tuesday to end what The New York Times called a "trying session." Intense negotiations involving Governor Cuomo, Assembly Speaker Heastie and Senate Leader Flanagan have reportedly continued on many disparate issues.

You never know what might wind up on the trade list. We must take nothing for granted down the homestretch. It won't be over till it's over.

Deafening Silence Continues

All this is occurring against a deafening silence involving almost all of the groups that profusely thanked the Governor for "banning" shale fracking without knowing any of the details of what the prohibition would involve.

DEC Commissioner Martens has since testified that any shale fracking prohibition would not be permanent and could be "revisited at any time when new or significant information comes to light."

The Devil Will be in the Details of the Final SGEIS Findings Statement

I wish to thank everyone who has continued to work hard in recent weeks and months.

We are trusting but verifying. We are playing to the whistle. This is Politics 101.

Please Keep Calling Governor Cuomo at 518 474 8390 until a Final SGEIS Findings Statement is Issued.

You will hear a recording. Press 2 to leave a message or press 3 to speak with a live person. Either option is fine.

"Governor Cuomo, please require DEC to issue a Findings Statement that implements the Final SGEIS 'No-Action' alternative: 'The denial of permits to develop the Marcellus Shale and other low-permeability gas reservoirs by horizontal drilling and high-volume hydraulic fracturing.'"

This would prevent the horrifically inadequate Final SGEIS from authorizing shale fracking in New York.

Thanks so much for all your able assistance.

Very best regards,

Walter
